Chijo Tachibana was born in 1848 in Hakata, Kyushu, a descendant of Jogen.
He began playing the biwa while young and soon achieved fame. In regard for his remarkable talent he was conferred the title of Hogen. Later he improved on the biwa and biwa music, and founded the Chikuzen Biwa school (1898).
He was often summoned to the palace to play before the Imperial family. Late in life he handed the Chijo title to his son and under the name of Kyokuo-Myosai became the head of the Chikuzen Biwe family. He had many followers.
