Career
Formerly a retainer of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) Clan, he distinguished himself as an army and naval strategist of the Imperial government in the civil war preceding the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Held important posts in the Government, being appointed a State Councillor (1880).
