Chikudo Kishi was born in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. Original personal name: Shoroku.
Chikudo Kishi was first a painter belonging to the Kano school,a pupil of Eigaku Kano, and later ot Renzan Kishi, who subsequently became his foster father.
Not content with just imitating old styles, Chikudo Kishi originated a style of his own which is the forerunner of the modern Shasei (sketching of nature) school. His best works were paintings of animals, especially tigers, cats and cows. It is said that he went mad while he was painting a tiger for an exhibition.
