He was such an unruly, dissipated youth that he was at one time kept under custody at the home of Baiitsu Yamamoto, an artist, and was trained by him. Although he started as a literati-painter, he later learned from the Tosa school and was influenced by Western painting. Emphasized realism and was good at painting horses.
