Background
Chikuo Araki was born in 1822. His family name was Araki, and his pseudonym Kodo. He called himself Chikuo in his later years. Third son of Kamesaburo Araki, a clansman of Mizuguchi, Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture).

Education
He was a disciple of Kodo Toyoda who was a famous flute player.
Career
Became a wandering flute player and after mastering the art, he organized the Kinko School of shakuhachi music as it is played today. Upon the death of his master, he became Kodo II. The Kinko School, which had been on the verge of extinction, was revived by him in a new form. In 1891, he retired after turning over his house to his son, Kodo III, and spent his remaining years in Imado, Asakusa, Tokyo.
