Aitmatov, Chingiz Torekulovich was born on December 12, 1928 in Sheker Village, Kirghizia, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Son of Aitmatov Torekul and Nahima Aitmatov.


Degree in Animal Husbandry, Kirghiz Agricultural Institute, Frunze, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, 1952. Postgraduate, Literature Institute, Moscow, 1958.


Writes in both Russian and Kirghiz. His First short stories attracted the critics’ attention. Several of his books have been made into Films. Writer since 1952; formerly Correspondent for Pravda. Chairman 1969-1986; Chair, of Union of Writers of Kirghiz S.S.R. since 1986. Candidate; Writer of Kirghiz S.S.R. 1968.

Vice-Chairman Committee of Solidarity with Peoples of Asian and African Countries. Deputy to USSR Supreme Soviet. Chairman Issyk-Kul Forum since 1986.
