Chogoro Yamamoto was born in Shizuoka in 1820. He was the third son of Sanemon Kumomizu.
The two biggest events in his life were his feud with Katsuzo Kurokoma, another kyokaku in Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture), and the bloody battle he and his followers fought against the party led by Anotoku, kyokaku in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), on Mount Kojin.
His two henchmen, Omasa and Komasa (Big Masa and Little Masa), are celebrated in kodan and drama. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), he turned to public welfare work at the advice of Nyosui Fuseya. He was befriended by Tesshu Yamaoka, noted statesman.
Many former samurai came under his protection after the restoration. He cultivated a large acreage of farmland at the foot of Mount Fuji.
