He did not like his family profession of medicine and turned to literature. Studied waka poetry under Nagamasa Hirama at Sumiyoshi (Osaka).
Became a poet of the Nijo School. Wrote many books on waka and taught many disciples, including Kagenori Kato.
Choin Ariga, his eldest son, and Choshu, his grandson, were distinguished scholars of Japanese classics.
