Chohan’s exploits are told of in Ydkyoku (Noh songs) titled Eboshiori and Kumazaka. According to the legend, he was a thief who lived by robbing travelers. It is said he followed Yoshitsune Minamoto (also known in youth as Ushiwaka-Maru), from his residence at Akasaka in Mino (Gifu Prefecture) to Ōshū (northeast Japan) with Kichiji Kaneuri, and attacked the party to rob them of the treasures they were carrying, but was overwhelmed and killed by Yoshitsune.
