Chokan Sano was born in 1791 in Kyoto, Japan. He was a descendant five generations removed of Chokan, a Korean lacquerware maker who was naturalized a Japanese.
In his middle age, he traveled in many provinces to improve his art. He went to Edo with an intention of learning the secret method of a gold lacquerware artist of the Shogunate. Unable to attain his objective, he studied hard and evolved himself a method of his own.
An artist of Bohemian habits, he always endeavored to evolve something new. He declined to execute orders which he did not like even if he was offered large sums of money.
