Choshichiro Kida was granted 20 chobu (a cho is 2,45 acres) of land in Nara Prefecture for experimental purposes where he planted fruit trees and cereal. In spite of discouragement from official sources he continued with his experiment and eventually cultivated 50 chobu of land and succeeded in making Nara one of the biggest orchards in Japan.
