Coffey was praised for his "tour-de-force performance.. giving a shockingly convincing performance that is equally perverse and plausible". Roger Ebert also singled Coffey out in his "Best films of 2011" compilation. In April 2012, Coffey starred in the short film BFF, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was written and directed by Neil LaBute.
In January 2014, Coffey made his Broadway debut in the play Bronx Bombers, as Joe DiMaggio at the Circle in the Square after originating the role Office-Broadway at Primary Stages in 2013.

A 1999 graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Coffey has originated roles in Richard Nelson’s Frank"s Home, directed by Robert Falls (Playwrights Horizons, New York City, Goodman Theater, Chicago, Illinois), Richard Nelson"s How Shakespeare Won the West (Huntington Theater, Boston, Master of Arts) and working alongside Arthur Miller in his penultimate play, Resurrection Blues, directed by Mark Lamos (Old Globe Theater, San Diego, California).
