During his study, Chris Stewart joined Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel in a school band called the Garden Wall. This band was joined by classmates Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips to form Anon, which was renamed Genesis in 1967.
At age seventeen Chris Stewart "retired" as the first drummer of the rock group Genesis, after which he became a farmer. In more recent years the musician-turned-farmer-turned-author would be heard from, primarily through the pages of his 1999 British bestseller, Driving over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucía. Later, Chris published the sequels, A Parrot In The Pepper Tree and The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society. In 2014 he wrote a further book of stories, Last Days of the Bus Club. Stewart has also contributed to two books in the Rough Guides series: the Rough Guide to Andalucia and the Rough Guide to China.
Chris Stewart finished last for the position of local councilor in the 27 May 2007 local elections in Órgiva representing the Green Party.
Chris Stewart is married to Ana Exton and has a daughter Chloë.
