In Grand Rapids he was apprenticed to architect William C. Robinson when he was fourteen years old, and continued in Mr. Robinsons employ until 1902 when he left to begin practice with William Clark (who later moved to Los Angeles). Vierhelig & Clark were known as architects of a number of buildings in Grand Rapids, among which were the original unit of St. Mary's Hospital and the Catholic Church of St. Isadore.
