Background
Arendrup was born in Frederikshavn as the son of Christian Rasmus Arendrup, councillor of Fyens Stift, and Nanna Marie Henne, the daughter of a marine Commander.

Education
In 1856, Arendrup graduated from Sorø Akademi and the following year, he started at the Royal Military Academy where he graduated as Engineering Second Lieutenant á la suite.
Career
He went to Fredericia in 1861 to join preparations for the impending war with Germany. When sea mines started to be used abroad, Arendrup was installed as assistant to Major C. F. North. Schrøders work on the Danish mine command. On April 1, 1881, Arendrup was pronounced Governor of the Danish West Indies.
Arendrup was married to Almira Kjellerup, the daughter of a former councillor in the Danish West Indies.
