Christian Ullmann was the longtime editor of Suddeutsche Zeitung in Munich, Germany, and a frequent contributor to periodicals on issues concerning law, family, and Asia and the Middle East. Ullmann teamed up with physician Manfred Porkert to write Chinese Medicine, originally published in German as Die Chinesisch Medizin, a Latinate lexicon of ancient Chinese medical terms. In addition, Ullmann and Porkert discuss two views - Western and Eastern - of the person. In the West, according to a review of the book in the Los Angeles Times, a human being is perceived as a biological machine, while in Chinese thought the body is comprised of a group of interacting energy patterns called "chi." As one would expect, opposing views have given rise to two very different forms of medical practice. Western physicians use drugs and surgery to "heal" bodily malfunctions, while their Eastern counterparts use diet, exercise, and meditation to balance an off-kilter energy flow.
From 1969 to 1973 Ullmann worked at the Goethe Institute. In 1986 he published Leben nach Tschernobyl.
Christian Ullmann was a member of Gesellschaft fur Familienrecht, Familienforschung und Familienpolitik, Institut für Familienrecht und Familienforschung and Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Ethnomedizin.
Christian Ullmann had a daughter - Christine Jessica.
