Driver graduated from Oxford University in 1955.
From 1955 to 1958, Driver was a conscientious objector who chose to serve his country in the Friends Ambulance Unit International Service. After leaving the service, he worked as a reporter for the Liverpool Daily Post in England. In 1960 Driver joined the staff of London’s Guardian until 1968. At that time he took over his father’s book shop, and became the editor of The Good Food Guide in 1970.
Driver also contributed articles to newspapers and journals, including the London Times, Frontier, and New Statesman.

1984Driver married Margaret Perfect Driver on June 5, 1958. They had 3 children: Catharine, Penny and Beatrice.
