Best-selling author Christopher Hibbert offers an absorbing chronicle of the fierce and deadly confrontation that saved the British army from annihilation during the Napoleonic Wars, but resulted in the death of their fine general: Sir John Moore. With the aid of eyewitness accounts, modern photographs, battle plans, and maps, Hibbert paints a horrifying picture of the hardships and sufferings of this bitter campaign, which unfolded in Corunna, Spain on January 17th, 1809. “Fast-flowing, taut and economical...superb.”—Times Literary Supplement

Here is the true story of the events that inspired the famous film, A Bridge Too Far, told in compelling style by Christopher Hibbert, one of Britain's foremost historians. In September, 1944, in Arnhem, Holland, what was to have been a brilliant battle-a battle meant to hasten an end to the war-instead turned into an epic tragedy. Nine-thousand men of the First British Airborne division parachuted into the countryside, behind German lines, with a mission: to capture and hold the bridge over the Rhine ahead of the advancing British Second Army. But the result was disastrous: the men faced constant bombardment. Nine days later, after some of the fiercest street fighting of the war, only 2,000 of the paratroopers managed to escape to safety.

(The years of Elizabeth's childhood were troubled - fraugh...)
The years of Elizabeth's childhood were troubled - fraught with danger and beset with the political and religious plots of those around her. At the age of two her mother, Anne Boleyn, was beheaded by her father, Henry VIII; Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and banished from the royal court. At 21, she was imprisoned in the Tower of London by her sister, Mary. And at 25 she was crowned Queen of England and Ireland, ruling as the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty until her death in 1603. The reign of Elizabeth was characterized by the virgin queen cult that grew up around her fierce independence, by her epic defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, by England's seafaring prowess personified in the figures of Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh and by the great flowering of artistic and literary creativity that was catalyzed in the plays of Shakespeare and Marlowe. In this classic biography, Christopher Hibbert paints a compelling and evocative portrait of one of history's most fascinating women, illuminated against a backdrop of the tumultuous, glorious events of the Elizabethan era - England's Golden Age.

( A riveting biography that vividly captures the life and...)
A riveting biography that vividly captures the life and times of the last Victorian king. To his mother, Queen Victoria, he was "poor Bertie," to his wife he was "my dear little man," while the President of France called him "a great English king," and the German Kaiser condemned him as "an old peacock." King Edward VII was all these things and more, as Hibbert reveals in this captivating biography. Shedding new light on the scandals that peppered his life, Hibbert reveals Edward's dismal early years under Victoria's iron rule, his terror of boredom that led to a lively social life at home and abroad, and his eventual ascent to the throne at age 59. Edward is best remembered as the last Victorian king, the monarch who installed the office of Prime Minister.

This beautifully written, informative study is a portrait, a history and a superb guide book, capturing fully the seductive beauty and the many layered past of the Eternal City. It covers 3,000 years of history from the city's quasi-mythical origins, through the Etruscan kings, the opulent glory of classical Rome, the decadence and decay of the Middle Ages and the beauty and corruption of the Renaissance, to its time at the heart of Mussolini's fascist Italy. Exploring the city's streets and buildings, peopled with popes, gladiators, emperors, noblemen and peasants, this volume details the turbulent and dramatic history of Rome in all its depravity and grandeur.

( Hibbert delivers a superbly detailed picture of the lif...)
Hibbert delivers a superbly detailed picture of the life and times of George IV including his exorbitant spending on his homes, his clothes, and his women; his patronage of the arts; his "illegal" marriage to Catholic Mrs Fitzherbert, and lesser known facts such as his generous charity donations and his witty one-liners, including one he uttered when he met his bride-to-be (Caroline of Brunswick) for the first time: "Harris, I am not well, fetch me a brandy." George IV was the son of George III (who went insane and inspired "The Madness of King George") and was the founder of the prestigious King's College in London.

(Venice: The Biography of a City is a vivid, highly readab...)
Venice: The Biography of a City is a vivid, highly readable and completely original account of this most beautiful of cities -- at once a narrative, a social history and a guide-book. Christopher Hibbert's similar book, Rome: The Biography of a City, was praised for its lucid style, innovative approach to the problems of combining narrative and architectural history, revealing character sketches and skillfully chosen illustrations. Venice was one of the great marvels of the medieval world. By war and cunning diplomacy, by the prosperity of her trade and the originality of her shipbuilders, she maintained for five centuries her position as Queen of the Adriatic, the Most Serene Republic. In the 18th century the city became the glittering showcase of the Grand Tour (and the 'brothel of Europe') until, powerless against Napoleon, she became the property first of France, then of Austria. Yet she never lost her power to fascinate; and the Venice of Byron and Shelley, Ruskin, Proust and George Eliot, Henry James and many other foreign visitors is described in all her changing moods, throughout the 19th century, generation after generation. An account of Venice in the 20th century and recent efforts to save the city from the disasters of pollution and flood bring the story current. A comprehensive gazetteer describes every building mentioned in the text and every monument and work of art of importance in Venice. Christopher Hibbert's account is therefore the ideal companion (history-book, guide-book and picture-book) for anyone who has ever visited, or hopes to visit, this most miraculous of cities. Illustrated in color and black and white.

The story of this war has usually been told in terms of a conflict between blundering British generals and their rigidly disciplined red-coated troops on the one side and heroic American patriots in their homespun shirts and coonskin caps on the other. In this fresh, compelling narrative, Christopher Hibbert portrays the realities of a war that raged the length of an entire continent-a war that thousands of George Washington's fellow countrymen condemned and that he came close to losing. Based on a wide variety of sources and alive with astute character sketches and eyewitness accounts, Redcoats and Rebels presents a vivid and convincing picture of the "cruel, accursed" war that changed the world forever. 16 pages of illustrations. "Hibbert combines impeccable scholarship with a liveliness of style that lures the reader from page to page."

Hibbert, Christopher was born on March 5, 1924 in Enderby, England. Son of Harold Victor and Catherine Maud (Doar) Hibbert.
In 1924 Arthur Raymond Hibbert was born in Enderby, Leicestershire, the son of Canon H. V. Hibbert (died 1980) and his wife Maude, and was educated at Radley College, before he went up to Oriel College at the University of Oxford.
He has been called "a pearl of biographers" (New Statesman) and "probably the most widely-read popular historian of our time and undoubtedly one of the most prolific" (The Times). Hibbert was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the author of many books, including The Story of England, Disraeli, Edward VII, George IV, The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici, and Cavaliers and Roundheads. He was awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and later Master of Arts. He left Oriel College to join the Army, where a sergeant major referred to Hibbert as Christopher Robin based upon his youthful looks.
The name "Christopher" subsequently stuck.
Hibbert served as an infantry officer in the London Irish Rifles regiment in Italy during World World War II, reaching the rank of captain. Hibbert became the personal assistant to General Alan Duff.
From 1945 to 1959 he was a partner in a firm of land agents and auctioneers, and began his writing career in 1957. Christopher Hibbert was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Geographical Society, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Literature by the University of Leicester.
He lived at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
He died on 21 December 2008 in Henley-on-Thames from bronchial pneumonia at the age of 84.
