He was born in Whitstable and died in Farnborough, Kent. He appeared in 64 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman and wicketkeeper. He scored 1,629 runs with a highest score of 124 and completed 130 catches with 21 stumpings.
In 1983 Howland joined the fledgling cable television sports channel Screensport as marketing director
