Christopher James was born on May 8, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. His great-grandfather was philosopher William James, his great-uncle writer Henry James and his grandfather printer Alexander James.
Christopher James received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1969) from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and a Master of Arts (1971) from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
Christopher James was teaching in Massachusetts, both at Harvard University in Cambridge and at the Worcester Art Museum School. Previously he taught at Keene State College in New York State (1977-1978) and at Greenfield Community College in Massachusetts (1971-1978).
