Christopher Nolan is an award-winning filmmaker who has been recognized for his work as a director, writer, and producer. He has helmed several hit movies, including "Inception," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Interstellar" and "Dunkirk."
Background
Christopher Nolan was born on 30 July 1970, in London, England, United Kingdom. His father Brendan James Nolan was an advertising executive, while his mother Christina was a flight attendant as well as an English teacher. He has two brothers.
Influenced by the film Star Wars, which released in 1977, a seven-year-old Nolan began shooting short films with his action figures using a camera he borrowed from his father.
Education
Christopher Nolan studied at Haileybury and Imperial Service College. He later went to the University College, London, where he studied English literature. During his college years, he made short films, such as "Tarantella" and "Larceny." He made another short film titled "Doodlebug" in 1997. "Doodlebug" is a psychological thriller film that conveyed a deep spiritual meaning despite being only three minutes long.
Career
After attending University College London, where he studied English literature, Nolan began directing corporate and industrial training videos. At the same time, he was working on his first full-length release, Following (1998). The film centered on a writer going to dangerous lengths to find inspiration; it took Nolan 14 months to complete. On the strength of its success on the festival circuit, he and his producer wife moved to Hollywood.
Nolan’s breakthrough came with the 2000 film Memento, a sleeper hit that he adapted from a short story written by his brother Jonathan. It used a destabilizing reverse-order storyline to mirror the fractured mental state of its protagonist, a man with short-term amnesia who is trying to track down the person who murdered his wife. The film was a critical and popular success and garnered the Nolan brothers an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Nolan followed up with Insomnia (2002), a thriller set in the Alaskan wilds, which starred Al Pacino as a compromised police detective.
In 2003 Warner Brothers enlisted Nolan to direct an installment of the Batman franchise, the first since 1997’s poorly received Batman & Robin. Nolan’s highly anticipated Batman Begins (2005), starring Christian Bale, focused on the superhero’s origins and featured settings and tone that were grimmer and more realistic than those of previous Batman films. Hugely well received, it became a forerunner of a new trend in superhero films: a move toward realism and away from the genre’s comic-book roots.
Nolan’s next project was The Prestige (2006), a story of two warring illusionists in early 20th-century London. He then began work on a second Batman film, which he wrote with his brother Jonathan. The Dark Knight (2008) leaned even more heavily on the moral and structural decay of its setting, fictional Gotham City, and it revived such classic Batman villains as the Joker (played by Heath Ledger). The Dark Knight became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
The release of Inception (2010) marked the realization of a script Nolan had begun a decade prior. It starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a corporate spy who steals secrets via a technology that allows him to enter people’s dreams. The film turns on this character’s attempt to move past the boundaries of technology in order to actually plant an idea in a dreamer’s head. Inception was another commercial and critical hit and earned Nolan a second Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. His Batman series concluded with the grandiose The Dark Knight Rises (2012), in which the superhero’s exploits were set against a backdrop of civil unrest. Nolan also helped develop the story for the Superman reboot Man of Steel (2013).
Nolan then helmed Interstellar (2014), which he had written with Jonathan. The sci-fi drama depicted the efforts of a group of scientists to relocate humanity from an Earth vitiated by war and famine to another planet by way of a wormhole. His next film, Dunkirk (2017), which he also wrote, centers on the evacuation of Allied troops from France during World War II. The action drama earned universal acclaim and was nominated for a number of Academy Awards, including best picture. In addition, Nolan received an Oscar nod for his direction. In 2020 he wrote and directed Tenet, a time-bending action thriller that centers on a C.I.A. agent trying to avert a world war.

Religion
Christopher Nolan appears to be non-religious.
Politics
Although his films are fodder for political posturing, Nolan declines to share his own political beliefs. It is known, that he donated 2,500$ to Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2012.
Views
Some of the most complex, interesting, and successful films of the new millennium have been directed by Christopher Nolan. His work has included a wide range of genres, from period pieces like "The Prestige," science fiction films like "Inception," the brooding Batman trilogy, and the space epic "Interstellar." He is not afraid to take on some incredibly complicated subjects, including aspects of theoretical physics, the theory of relativity, wormholes, 4-dimensional tesseracts, and using experimental military technologies to penetrate people’s private dreams to plant ideas that will influence their actual behavior.
On the face of it, Nolan’s visual style is simple compared to the prevalent Hollywood style, which usually involves over-the-top visual effects and complex technocrane movements. Nolan prefers minimal movement, and generally shows great restraint in anything that distracts from the story - such as dolly moves during dialogue.
He prefers to use computer graphics as a last resort, to shoot a practical version of any stunt or effect, and only then use VFX to enhance what he’s already captured. On Inception, they created real explosions, then enhanced what they captured in post-production. Doing this creates a veneer of realism, which is critically important for a filmmaker who’s always asking the audience to question the reality of what they’re watching.
He mirrors this approach in his use of practical locations. He and his production designers travel extensively to find exotic locations that have a real patina of time, rather than create something on a sound stage, sometimes enhancing them further with set dressing or visual effects.
Lighting-wise, he likes to keep faces in rich shadows rather than over-illuminate the subject. This mirrors Nolan’s characters, who often have hidden agendas or a dark side.
Rather than light both sides of the face with his key light, Nolan’s signature style is to have the key light just catch the near-side eye so that three-fourths of the face is in shadow.
Nolan’s films keep such detail in the shadows (without the color becoming murky or noisy) because he shoots every one of his films on celluloid.
Nolan is also a huge proponent of large-format shooting and projection - he shoots many of his films on 65mm. This wide field of view is almost like a special effect in itself and combined with spectacular locations, it can create visuals that seem out of this world.
Rather than shoot a lot of wides and close-ups, Nolan prefers to let his dialogue play out in a medium single shot that shows the speaker’s face, the head and shoulder of the person they are talking to, and the environment around them. This means that a single performance can play out over a single take without becoming too cut up in the edit.
Quotations:
"Now you're looking for the secret, but you won't find it...because you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled."
"You musn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling."
"Either you die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain."
"But I know the rage that drives you. That impossible anger strangling the grief until the memory of your loved ones is just poison in your veins. And one day you catch yourself wishing the person you loved had never existed, so you'd be spared your pain."
"There's a point where we just let the music take over everything."
"Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded."
"The thing you fail to grasp is that people are not basically good. We are basically selfish. We shove and clamour and cry for adoration, and beat down everyone else to get it. Life is a competition of prattling peacocks enraptured in inane mating rituals. But for all our effacing and self-importance, we are all slaves to what we fear most. You have so very much to learn. Here. Let me teach you."
"I always find myself gravitating to the analogy of a maze. Think of film noir and if you picture the story as a maze, you don't want to be hanging above the maze watching the characters make the wrong choices because it's frustrating. You actually want to be in the maze with them, making the turns at their side, that keeps it more exciting... I quite like to be in that maze."
Personality
Chris Nolan always looks sharp on set, wearing a uniform that is said to "[split] the difference between the demands of an executive suite and a tundra." More for the practicality and less for the aesthetic, the director often repeats two outfits for his shooting days: one for warmer weather and another for the cold. He decided that "it was a waste of energy to choose anew what to wear every day."
Christopher Nolan is a huge fan of James Bond, and said to David S. Goyer, that his favorite James Bond movie is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969).
Some of Nolan’s early films, such as "Memento" and "Insomnia," drew comparisons to the noir genre, especially for the trope of using vulgar, sexually aggressive women as villains.
His top ten favorite movies are "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), "The Black Hole" (1979), "Blade Runner" (1982), "Chinatown" (1974), "The Hitcher" (1986), "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" (1977), "The Man Who Would Be King" (1975) and "Topkapi" (1964), as well as anything by Stanley Kubrick.
He always carries a flask of hot tea on set. His favorite tea is Earl Grey.
Physical Characteristics:
Nolan's height is 5 ft 11¼ in or 181 cm, his weight is 73 kg or 161 lbs. His distinctive features are thin lips and a pointed nose, blond hair, and blue eyes.
