He was educated at the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Science, 1968. Master of Science , 1971) and the University of East Anglia (Doctor of Philosophy, 1974).

His research is primarily concerned with Fish physiology. He joined the faculty of McMaster University in 1976 where he was a Canada Research Chair in Environment and Health. He was also awarded the Fry Medal of the Canadian Society of Zoologists in 1999.
