Lecturer in archaeology University Durham, 1972-1981, senior lecturer in archaeology, 1981-1988, reader in viking archaeology, 1989-1990. Professor archaeology University Glasgow, 1990—2006, vice principal, 2000—2006.

Chair archaeology UHI Millenium Institute, since 2007.
