Ahn was born in Busan, South Korea, on January 15, 1971.
Chul Hyun Ahn earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts after completing his studies at the Chugye University for the Arts in Seoul. In the year 1997 he migrated to the United States. In 2002 he obtained a Masters of Fine Arts from the Mount Royal School at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
Ahn was first noticed by Constantine Grimaldis, the owner of the C. Grimaldis Gallery, in 2002 during his exhibition. Soon after, he was offered to hold his first exhibition with C. Grimaldis Gallery in the winter of 2003 in a one-man exhibition. It was titled Infinity - Emptiness and included six light sculptures. Starting from 2003 Chul Hyun Ahn has exhibited nationally and internationally.
He is a member of a group of young light artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Spencer Finch, Ivan Navarro and Leo Villareal. His multiple permanent sculpture series including "Forked Series" and "Tunnel Series" examine the limitations of space and optics. Ahn lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. Ahn's interest for three-dimensionality and abstraction led him to incorporate into his works systems, which were used by such artists as Dan Flavin and Donald Judd. Chul Hyun Ahn used basic forms, grids and other superimpositions of materials, particularly two-way mirrors.

The foundations of the artist’s research reside in Buddhist doctrines, according to which emptiness precedes illumination. So, he creates meditative objects that calm down the spirit and invite the viewer on a spiritual voyage.
Quotations: "There are no clear answers to what lies beyond the physical limitations of our world. This is the crux of the work - the audience must bring themselves to the threshold and confront the infinite space to complete the work."
