He received a Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Alberta in 1968, followed by a Master of Science from the University of Toronto in 1969. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney in 1972.
Yuen began his academic career in 1972 as a research fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he worked until 1976. He then joined the University of Tasmania in Hobart, serving from 1976 to 1981 and advancing from lecturer to senior lecturer. In 1981, he moved to the University of Hong Kong as director of computer studies, a role he held until 1983.
In 1983, he joined the National University of Singapore as professor of computer science, marking the central phase of his career. He served in this position until 2007 and was head of department from 1985 to 1993, contributing to the growth and direction of computer science education at the university. He retired after more than two decades of service.
