Began his studies under Setsudo Saito and then entered the Shoheiico (Shogunatefs college) at Edo.
Appointed judge to the Ministry of Justice (1872) and then founded Nisho-Gakuslm College in Tokyo (1877) and taught the Chinese classics there for 40 years. In between also taught at the Imperial Court for 20 years, and held the title of a Councilor. Among his works are Chushu Bwiko (collection of his essays), Chushu Shikd (collection of his poems) and Shisho Shiroku (a commentary on Confucian teachings).
