Career
Chuzaemon Kurauchi is said to have emigrated to Hokkaido, where under orders of the Magistrate of Hakodate he was asked to survey the western shores of Saghalien. Later in 1859 in an attempt to explore Russian territory drifted ashore to Nikolaevsk and was escorted back by the Russians the following year and granted the privileges of a samurai as a reward for his distinguished services.
