Background

Newell, Cicero was born on August 12, 1840 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. Son of Josiah and Priscilla (Chamberlain) Newell.

Education

Educated district school.

Career

Enlisted Company H, 1st Michigan Vol. Infantry, April 16, 1861, 3 months service. Reƫnlisted and elected First lieutenant Troop D, 3d Michigan Cavalry, August 1861.

Captain, Troop K, March 31, 1862. Major 10th Michigan Cavalry, August 19, 1863. Honorary discharged, 1865.

Participated in more than 30 battles and many skirmishes. Had command of 10th Michigan Cavalry at Battle of Greenville, Tennessee, when General John A. Morgan was killed. United States Indian agent for the Brule Sioux, of Dak., 1879-1880.

Founder Parental School, Seattle, Washington, 1891.
