Claire graduated in 1966 from Bennington College. and earned a master's degree from Adelphi University in the Waldorf School teacher training program and in Deaf education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Claire continued working for several years as a teacher of deaf children. In 1970 - 1972 she worked as a teacher of kindergarten and art at Caritas Day Classes for Deaf Children. She also was an arts and crafts teacher at elementary schools and public libraries in 1980 - 1994, and has also worked as a substitute teacher. Since 1972 Claire workes as a writer.
