Later, in the mid-eighties, Claire left teaching to become a full-time writer. She moved to Los Angeles in 1994. Now she teaches not-yet-published writers through the UCLA Writers' Extension Program. Her first mystery, Lessons in Murder, was published in the U.S. in 1988. She has served as the president of Sisters in Crime and is a member of both the Mystery Writers of America and the Science Fiction Writers of America. She lives in Los Angeles and is working on the finale of the Carol Ashton series, Lethal Care.
Australian mystery writer Claire McNab is well known for her many novels featuring divorced lesbian Carol Ashton, a detective inspector serving in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. McNab introduced the character in 1988 with Lessons in Murder, and in the ensuing years, she has featured the resourceful, sexually conflicted heroine in a series of additional tales. A prolific writer, McNab is also the author of several other novels, some nonfiction offerings, and a number of books for children and young adults published under the pseudonym, Claire Carmichael. She is the recipient of the 2006 Alice B. Medal.
