Clara Elizabeth Orban was born on January 3, 1960 in Teaneck, New Jersey, United States, to Denes Orban, a physician, and Giuliana Zamboni Orban, a teacher.
In 1981, Orban received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and French from the University of Chicago and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1990 from the same university. She also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1983, a Master of Arts degree in French in 1984 and a Master of Arts degree in Italian in 1985, all from the University of Geneva.
Clara Orban began her career as a lecturer at the University of Chicago. From 1985 to 1987, she was a teacher of Italian at Roman Catholic schools. In 1986, she also was a teacher of French at Motorola Corporation. In 1987, she served as an instructor in Italian at Roosevelt University and held the same post at Latin School of Chicago in 1988.
From 1989 to 1990, Clara was an instructor in French at the University of Chicago and a lecturer in Italian at the University of Illinois. From 1990 to 1996, she held the position of an assistant professor at DePaul University, and, since 1996, she has been a professor of French and Italian at DePaul University. She regularly teaches courses at all levels in both Italian and French, and, since 2002, she has taught Geography 350: The World of Wine. In 2007, she became a certified sommelier.
Clara has published books, book chapters, articles and presented papers on surrealism, futurism, language pedagogy, AIDS literature, sports, TV and Italian film. Her books include scholarly and pedagogical texts: Au Travail!, a workbook for Business French; Cytomegalovirus (translation of Hervé Guibert's work from French); The Culture of Fragments: Words and Images in Futurism and Surrealism; and Surrealist Case Studies: Literature, the Arts and Medicine. She published her first novel, Terra Firma, in 2006. Her sixth book, Body [in] Parts (2008), provides an analysis of the Marquis de Sade's influence on Hervé Guibert.
Dr. Orban has served on almost 100 committees at DePaul (university, college, department level) plus almost 40 committees outside in service to the profession or to the community. She has given numerous lectures on wine and led fundraising wine events.
Clara Orban is best known as the author of a number of books and numerous articles. She authored an award-winning novel, Terra Firma, a gripping history of love, loss and forgiveness. Orban is also known for her lectures and presentations that she has given around the world.
Clara is also a certified sommelier and teaches geography of wine class at DePaul University.

2008Clara is most intrigued by questions of connections. She is interested in the ways words and images work together. Orban is also trying to find out whether literature and medicine are really so far apart. Clara also likes to explore issues of culture clash in media.
Orban is a member of the International Association of Word and Image Studies, Modern Language Association of America, American Association of Teachers of French, American Association of Teachers of Italian, American Association of Italian Studies, Chicago Narrative Group and Golden Key.
Student interest led Clara to inherit Geography 350: the World of Wine. In 2007, she became a certified sommelier and leads regular wine tasting events as fundraisers.
On June 16, 1985, Clara married Elliot Weisenberg.
