An assistant to cameraman Frank Heisler at Fox Studios for twelve years, he then taught at John C. Fremont High School for thirty-five years, retiring in 1959.
Bach founded the first photojournalism course in the country in 1924. Nearly three hundred of his students became professional photographers, among them Mark Kauffman, Bob Landry, John Florea, Hank Walker, George Strook, John Wilkes and John Dominis (all of whom worked on staff for Life magazine), Art Rogers (of the Los Angeles Times) and John G. Zimmerman (of Sports Illustrated). Another 146 students became wartime photo-correspondents.
