Derwent, Clarence was born on March 23, 1884 in London, England. Son of Charles and Alice (Falk) Derwent.

Education

Student St. Pauls, London, 1898-1902.

Career

Came to the United States, 1916. Played on London stage with Sir Herbert Tree, Granville Barker, etc., 1908-1916, with Sir Frank Benson’s Shakespearian Company, London, 1904-1908. 1st engagement in the United States with Grace George in Shaw’s Major Barbara, New York City, 1916.

Played leading parts with Otis Skinner, Margaret Anglin, Laurette Taylor, Katharine Cornell, Lunt and Fontanne, etc. Director following plays on Broadway: Rebecca, 1944. Mademoiselle, 1932; Brittle Heavan, 1934.

President Actors Equity Association, chairman Experimental Theatre Board. Member board American National Theatre and American Theatre Wing.
