December 1972); children—Betsey Jane, Charles Frank (adopted). Commissioned ensign United States Navy, June 1920, and advanced through grades to rear admiral, August 1947. Command United States Ship Arctic, 1941-1942, United States Ship Baltimore, Japanese occupation, 1945-1946.

Commander Cruiser Division Two, since 1950. Plans div. of commander-in-chief United States Fleet, 1942-1943. Senior Naval officer in Military Mission to Russia, 1943-1945.

Assistant director Central Intelligence, 1946-1948. Commander Naval Base, Norfolk, Virginia, 1948-1950. Later chief military assistance advisory group, Norway.

Retired, 1959.
