He was a candidate for president of Chile in 2013, but lost the primary election against Michelle Bachelet, José Antonio Gómez, and Andrés Velasco. On 11 March 2014 Orrego became intendant of Santiago Metropolitan Region. Orrego is a Roman Catholic.
