Claudio Tozzi studied in the Colégio de Aplicação da Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade de São Paulo from 1956 to 1962 and in the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo between 1964 and 1969. While studying at university Tozzi met Mário Schenberg, an art critic and physicist as well as Wesley Duke Lee, Antonio Dias and Roberto Magalhães, among others.
In 1969 Tozzi made a trip to Europe, after which he produced two series "Astronauts" and "Bolts". They included both engravings and paintings. From 1972 his work developed from pop to conceptual, when he started to experiment with colour and light. Claudio Tozzi’s interest in figuration evolved from a necessity to popularise art in São Paulo, which had very few platforms for young artists to present their works, besides in yearly. In his artworks Tozzi usually addressed current political issues including the space race and the Cuban revolution. Among the most iconic works are his representations of astronauts and Che Guevara.
In the 1970s, along with Abram Berman, Claudio Tozzi was one of the creators of Cinemobiles, making short films in the Super 8. Among his works were the films "Grama", "Frame", "The Death of the Chicken" and "Sinus".
Tozzi participated in several group exhibitions, among which: Jovem Arte Contemporânea at the Universidade de São Paulo Contemporary Art Museum; Brazil 500 years - Contemporary Art; Brasilian artists and mass iconography-ESDI/Rio; Culture in Belém; Tradition and Rupture; Ship of senseless people-MACUSP; The World Goes Pop at theTate Modern; International Pop at the Walker Art Center, Dallas Museum of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art; São Paulo, Venice, Paris, Medelín (Colombia ), Havana, Makurazaki (Japan) and Mercosul Biennials.
He presented his works in solo exhibitions at the Casa Brasileira Museum in São Paulo, Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Museum of Modern Art in Cascavel, Museum Andrade Muricy in Curitiba, Museum of Modern Art in Londrina, etc.
Claudio Tozzi has been one of the most important representatives of Pop Art movement in the 20th century. His works were presented in numerous art galleries both in Brazil and abroad.
The artist has been awarded many prizes. Among them are Press Prize Awards 2016 - Plastic Arts Miami Fort Lauderdale, Prize Trajectory 2016 by the Brazilian Association of Art Critics. Tozzi's drawing for a 600 m2-sized panel was chosen in a contest for a building in Av. Angélica, in São Paulo and a chapel in the campus of the FIEO.
