Emery graduated from University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
During his career Emery worked as a blacksmith, dishwasher, schoolteacher in Australia, carpenter, zookeeper, farmhand, land surveyor, and volunteer firefighter. Now Emery works as a freelance writer.
