Taught at Cagliari; Catania. Since 1949, Professor of the History of Philosophy, University of Naples.
Carbonara undertakes a critical revision of idealism which traces the steps from ancient metaphysics to later idealism and attempts to construct a correct critical philosophy of pure experience which, in its account of the place of spirit, rejects the distinctions within spirit posited in the work of Gentile and Croce. Experience is conceived as both objective and subjective and has a value that is made concrete in the historical individual whose interior life is expanded by an immediate embodiment in reality that is mediated by reflection. Embodied in an individual experience is an economic life which incorporates as an internal dialectic the demands of Marxism. Important attention is paid to art as the ideal objectification of experience which preserves the life of spirit and gives it organization and coherence.
