He served in that position from 1 December 1962, until 2 March 1973. Sir Clifford, son of James Campbell and Blance Ruddock Campbell, was a school teacher and headmaster from Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica. He had been an activist of the Jamaica Labour Party, and had served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as president of the Senate from 31 August 1962 to 30 November 1962, before being raised to the country"s highest office a few months after independence.
