He is best known for his contributions to population statistics, categorical data analysis, and latent class analysis. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1971 from Ohio University, and continued his studies at the University of Chicago, where he earned an Master of Arts in sociology and an Master of Science Starting in 1976 he served at the Pennsylvania State University faculty, rising to the rank of Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Professor of Statistics.
He served as an editor of several journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Demography, Sociological Methodology, and the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics.
The Clogg Award of the Population Association of America, the Clifford Clogg Award of the Methodology Section of the American Sociological Association, and the Clogg Scholarship of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research are named in his honor.
