With United States Geological Survey, 1878. Assistant chemist unites states department of Agriculture, 1878-1887. Inspector asphalt and cements, engineer department District of Columbia, 1887-1894.

Superintendent of tests, Barber Asphalt Paving Company, 1896-1900, and consultant chemical engineer same, since 1913. Proprietor New York Testing Laboratory, January 1, 1900-1910. Expert in asphalt, bitumen and Portland cement.
