Clifton Daniel was born on September 19, 1912, in Zebulon, North Carolina, United States. He was a son of Elbert Clifton Daniel Sr., a mayor and druggist of Zebulon, North Carolina, and Elvah Thomas (Jones) Daniel.
In 1933, Clifton received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1970, he obtained an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the same university.
Clifton began his career in journalism in 1933 by joining the staff of the Daily Bulletin as an associate editor in Dunn, North Carolina. The following year, in 1934, he moved to Raleigh’s News and Observer as a columnist but left in 1937 for an Associated Press as a reporter, war correspondent, and editor.
In 1944, Daniel was hired by the New York Times and continued his coverage of war-torn Europe and then of the Middle East. He was a correspondent in London, Moscow and Germany through the 1950's, receiving an award for his work from the Overseas Press Club.
Shortly after returning to the United States in 1955, Clifton met Margaret Truman, the only child of the former United States President Harry S. Truman. The couple kept their romance a secret until shortly before their wedding in April of 1956. Although Daniel's father-in-law was a former president, Daniel continued his journalistic career at the Times after his return to the United States in 1955, moving through the ranks until being named the managing editor of the newspaper in New York City in 1964, the second-highest position at the paper. He served in that position for five years before stepping down and moving to an associate editor’s position, which he held till 1977. In addition, from 1973 till 1977, Daniel served as Chief of The New York Times Washington bureau.
Between 1977 and 1986, Clifton held a post of a consultant, working in New York City. From 1986 till 1988, he acted as the editor-in-chief of Ecam Publications, Inc., of which he was editorial director between 1989 and 1990.
In 1984, Clifton's memoir "Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen" was published. It was followed in 1987 by "The Chronicle of the Twentieth Century", of which Daniel served as the editor.
