After a course of technical study at the Lowell School of Design, finished his training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Starting as a drafts¬man employed in various architectural offices in Boston, he first joined the late Lewis Bacon in partnership and after that association was terminated, practiced jointly with Thomas F. James until 1909. During the latter year Mr. Hill launched his career in New York where he entered into partnership with William W. Kent and John Jardine, and carried on his work under the name of Jardine, Kent & Hill, until Mr. Kent's subsequent retirement, when Harris H. Murdock took the latter's place in the firm.
Mr. Hill's architectural work with various associates in Boston and New York was quite extensive, comprising a large number of schools, theatres, churches, libraries and private homes. During his latter years in New York he planned a number of large office buildings including the following structures: 50 East 42nd, 25 stories; 244 Madison Avenue, 16 stories; 465 Fifth Avenue, 10 stories; 40 Worth Street, 17 stories; 90 Worth Street, 12 stories, and the 19-story building at 341 Madison Avenue.
