Russell, Clinton Warden was born on May 6, 1891 in Hico, Texas, United States. Son of William E. and Mollie (Anderson) Russell.


Student Texas A. and M. College, 1907-1908. Bachelor of Science, United States Military Academy, 1913. Graduated from Command and General staff schedul, 1925, Army War College, 1930, Naval War College, 1931.


Commissioned Second lieutenant, United States Army, 1913, and advanced through grades to brigadier general, 1940. Served in Infantry, United States and P.I., 1913-1916. Took flying training, 1916.

Served in punitive expedition to Mexico, 1916. Commander 7th Aero Squadron, Canal Zone, 1917. Served in various capacities at flying fields during World War.

Instructor R.O.T.C., Texas A. and M. College, 1920-1924. Instructor Command and General staff schedul, 1924-1929. In War Department General Staff, 1931-1935.

Chief of staff. Air Force Combat Command, since 1938.
