Clark was in a three way tie for the Brabazon Trophy, and finished as runner-up to Michael Bonallack in both The Amateur Championship and the English Amateur in 1965.

He was coached from the age of 13 by Sid Wilson at the North Cliff Golf Course in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. He turned professional after playing in the Walker Cup at the end of that year. He left the European Tour in the late 1970s.
Clark has since worked as a commentator for the British Broadcasting Corporation and Columbia Broadcasting System, and as a golf course architect, often alongside fellow British Broadcasting Corporation golf analyst Peter Alliss.
Clark has his golf course design company in Palm Desert, California and now resides in nearby Louisiana Quinta. His designs include Lake Winnipesaukee, Belgrade Lakes, Indian Wells Resort, The Hideaway, and Alcaidesa just outside Sotogrande, Spain.
