Clyde Fitch was born om May 2, 1865, in Elmira, New York.
Clyde Fitch educated at Holderness School and Amherst College, where he was a leader in dramatics.
In 1886 Fitch went to New York where he was commissioned by Mansfield to write Beau Brummel (1890), a striking success.
Fitch's career may be divided into two periods: from 1890 to 1900 he wrote derived and romantic plays, and from 1900 to 1909 he turned to original and realistic plays. Besides Beau Brummel, the first period included Pamela's Prodigy (1891), Nathan Hale (1898), The Moth and the Flame (1898), and Barbara Frietchie (1899). Under the influence of Howells' realism and the drama of ideas as developed by Ibsen, Fitch began to incorporate ideas into plays of contemporary life. The Climbers (1901) is a society comedy satirizing the struggle after wealth and position; The Stubbornness of Geraldine (1902) and Her Own Way (1903) applaud woman's intuition; The Girl with the Green Eyes (1902) shows the distortions of jealousy; The Truth (1906) reveals the power of a devoted love. Though these plays were thematic, they were not particularly substantial. Taunted by the critics, Fitch wrote his most powerful drama, The City (1909), a study of character in relation to environment. Fitch's career ended prematurely with his death in France, September 4, 1909.
