Clyde Eicher Vogeley was an American engineer, scientist, mathematics educator, consultant, and artist. He worked in radar and waveguide research, held numerous patents, directed the Bettis Reactor Engineering School, taught mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, and served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Background
Clyde Eicher Vogeley was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 19, 1917. He was the son of Clyde Eicher Vogeley and Eva May (Reynolds) Vogeley. His early professional experience combined art education with engineering and scientific work, a pattern that continued throughout his career in both technical education and the visual arts.
Education
Vogeley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Carnegie Mellon University in 1940. He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1944 and completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics there in 1949. His education provided a foundation for work that joined art instruction, engineering research, applied mathematics, and technical education.
Vogeley began his professional career as an art supervisor in the public school system of Springdale, Pennsylvania, from 1940 to 1941. After completing his engineering physics degree, he worked as a research engineer at Westinghouse Research Laboratories in East Pittsburgh from 1944 to 1954, contributing to radar, tracking systems, and waveguide technology. He served as a consultant to Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory from 1954 to 1956 while also teaching mathematics as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh from 1954 to 1964. He then worked at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin as a senior scientist from 1956 to 1959 and as supervisor of technical training from 1959 to 1971. From 1959 to 1969 he was associated with United States Navy nuclear power schools at Mare Island, California, and Bainbridge, Maryland. He became manager of the Bettis Reactor Engineering School in 1971 and director in 1977, serving in the latter role until 1992. From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a consultant to the United States Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. His career connected industrial research, nuclear-reactor training, university mathematics instruction, and engineering education.
Developed and received patents for radar tracking, phase-comparator tracking, modulation in ridged waveguides, ridged-waveguide matching and joining, and antenna-feed modulation systems.
