Background

Hoyt, Colgate was born on March 2, 1849 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Son of James M. and Mary Ella Hoyt.

Education

Educated Cleveland public schools, and Phillips Academy. (honorary Master of Arts, University of Rochester, 1895).

Career

Engaged in banking business. Government director, 1882-1884, company director, 1884, U.P. Railway. Resigned when Charles F. Adams became president.

Later director Oregon & Transcontinental (vice president 1889) and Oregon Railway & Navigation Company, and of N.P. R.R. Was on executive and financial coms. of latter, Vice-President Duluth & Manitoba R.R. Became interested in Wisconsin Central R.R., 1884, and one of its trustees.

Vice president North American Company until 1889. Member, 1889, of reorganized Committee of M.,K.&T. Railway and soon after 1st vice president M.,K.&T. Railway of Texas. Later senior partner in Stock Exchange house of Colgate Hoyt & Company.

Also vice president St. Joseph. South Bend & Southern Railroad Company. Director, Executive Committee United States Cast Iron Pipe & Foundry Company.
