In 2001, he co-founded Kovio, Incorporated., a Silicon Valley company that uses high-resolution printing techniques to create low-cost integrated circuits. Bulthaup earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he developed the technology in use at Kovio. He co-founded Oakland, California-based Self Aware Games with Seppo Helava in 2009.
In 2003, Bulthaup Liotta was named by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technology Review TR100 as one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35.
