Mr. Mitchell was born in London, United Kingdom, on October 8, 1927.
Colin Mitchell enlisted in the British Army in 1943, serving in Italy during World War II and at various locations scattered throughout the British Empire in the period of decolonization that followed the war.
Mr. Mitchell resigned his commission after his superiors disciplined him for acting against orders. He later served as a military consultant to rebels in Afghanistan and Nicaragua. Most recently he formed the Halo Trust in cooperation with other military officers, which promotes efforts to clear battlefields and war zones of land mines.
Mr. Mitchell was a gifted military and author, his book, Terrain Evaluation (1973), reflects his devotion to military service.
During World War II his best-known exploit came in 1967, when he was serving in British South Arabia (now part of Yemen). In the evening July 3, 1967, Mr. Mitchell led his Scottish Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders battalion — with regiments bagpipes and drums playing — straight into a rebel position. By the following morning, he had captured the position without losing a single soldier and having killed only one of the rebels.
